BSSO 2010 – Round 2: Three Sisters

May 13th, 2010

In contrast to the cold, grey weather at Mallory Park in March, the sun was shining come day two of Round 2 of the 2010 BSSO Championship at the Three Sisters race track in Wigan. Bright weather seems to bring about optimism, the Adrenalin Pedstop crew seemed optimistic that their race team; Josh, Sam and Zack, would do well at this meeting. As it transpired the positive outlook seemed to pay off.

So the second round of this year’s BSSO Championship took place on 08/09 May. Both days went really well especially for Josh who won all four races. Not only that he broke the lap record which he held in 2009 but that was on a 77cc not a 70cc that he rides now. Meanwhile, Sam successfully completed every race and won the Young Guns class and appears to be getting quicker all the time. What’s interesting to note is that the last time Sam raced at Three Sisters was when he was just seven years old.

Apart from injuring his knee after an off on day one, Zack did really well too bearing in mind that this was only his fourth race meeting. Zack appears to be getting to grips with the set up of the bike and is bringing lap times down every race and coming in mid-pack. It’s possible that he could end up in the top three within the next meeting or two.

POLINI VERSUS MALOSSI

Being upbeat is all well and good but when it comes down to the actual racing it all boils down to rider ability and the performance of the machine out there on the track. Likewise it’s all well and good having all the tools as long as you know how to use them. Josh Brown’s Piaggio Zip is now equipped with the very latest Polini Evolution 3 70cc engine. Taking care of the majority of the spanner work throughout the course of the season is 50cc Tuning’s Darryl Taylor so the bike’s in capable hands. A sprint session at Elvington last month proved that the bike was performing well certainly over a quarter mile with a big improvement in performance compared to the previous session at Elvington when the engine heat seized. Again, if you’ve been following Project Zip up to now then it should be fairly obvious that Adrenalin are keen advocates of all things Polini. All their race bikes are kitted out using the latest Polini products from Italy. The way Adrenalin see it, Josh’s performance is proving that Polini are an equal contender to Malossi (if not better) in terms of performance, in the right hands of course. It’s all about brand recognition and the name on everyone’s lips in tuning circles in the UK for many years has been predominantly Malossi. This being Adrenalin’s first year of racing, this experience is a great way to really test the product to its limit which can only benefit their customers in the long-run when it comes to giving sound product advice.

FOUR RACE VICTORY

Compared to the last round at Mallory, Josh was on better form at Three Sisters winning all four races. The following videos consist of unedited onboard footage of each race aboard Josh’s Zip:

Day 1:

In the first race Josh managed to win and finish 28 seconds ahead of Damon Tunnicliffe who came second:

Day 2:

In the third race on day two Josh managed to set a new lap record of 1:02.05 in lap four:

Bizarrely in race four Josh’s fastest lap and top speed (54.08 mph) were identical to race three which goes to show his consistency on the track:

The action continues at the next round of the 2010 BSSO Series at Cadwell Park on 20 June.
