BSSO 2010 – Round 3: Cadwell Park

June 23rd, 2010

After some fine results at Three Sisters we were excited about what could happen if the good luck continued at Cadwell. With plenty of time in between meetings to get organised what could go wrong?!

With the usual early morning departure things were looking good, dry weather with some sun was definitely better than the predicted wind and rain. Getting carried away on the Lincolnshire roads whilst on route set the day for some things going wrong, could we pull off a win at the big track with a little engine?

Once at Cadwell the day started out a little bit on the chilly side and after seeing the track for the first time (being a Cadwell virgin) I was amazed at how bad the spectator areas were and how much of a hill climb it was going to be between races. Sack the engine could I make it through the day?! Sam and Josh looked full of energy and the Tingles looked wired and ready to go, Zack sporting another tattoo close to his genitals, piercings and an obsession to show everyone everything – be careful ladies.

Before practice we did the usual checks and saw some sharp temperature increases on bike 665 which couldn’t be explained, everything looked good so we put it down to the scoot being stood too long. Practice got underway with everyone making it round the track, apart from number 665 and 620… “Shit” was the word predominantly used (among others) back in the paddock. This turn of events wasn’t on the agenda and just goes to show that however prepared you think you are everything can still go wrong at the last minute and it usually does.

AN ENGINE SWAP BEFORE RACE TWO?

After a brief spell of depression and some hankie use we had no option, swap 665’s engine, fast. With a donor bike on the sideline the plan was simple, take two out and put one in but could we pull it off in time to avoid the dreaded DNF (did not finish)? Well the answer is “yes” but only just, thanks to some strawberry water on tap 665 made it out. So there Josh was at the start line in race two, pole position to last in three seconds, unbelievable. “Could be something to do with the standard clutch being used on the donor bike” somebody pops up, FFS… Anyways after two laps of making it round the track we were spellbound, this over hasty attempt to get on the track might just pull a blinder. Lap after lap Josh pulled them in to take a reasonably easy first position by lap four going on to win. Race two also went well apart from the clutch losing drive at the top end. Hindered by the old classics and some harsh manoeuvres from some big autos, Josh’s chance of catching the leader started to disappear, but taking a second in race two still puts 665 in good stead for the rest of the championship.

663 / 620

Zack (663) had more luck this weekend with his engine holding form but big guys on big tracks with 70cc engines will always be a struggle. Zack came fifth in race one and fourth in race two, which if anything gave him the chance of getting some more track time. Meanwhile, young gun Sam (620), after the technical problems experienced during the practice session was sadly absent and unable to join his fellow team mates on the track which must have been quite a disappointment for the lad. With Lydden Hill being the next stop on the BSSO calendar this will separate the men from the boys when it comes to corner speed. Hopefully the cameras will give all who are watching a peak into something that anyone can get into.
